Histon & Impington Community Orchard Project

Want to get your hands dirty?

The first time we roughly marked out the site we began to realize quite how much time and effort was needed to transform a very large area of rough overgrown grassland into a beautiful orchard that the whole community could enjoy.

If you feel you can contribute some time, effort, or skills to the orchard, please get in touch or come along to one of our meetings or events and introduce yourself. Enthusiasm is just as important as skills, so don’t be put off if you’re not a keen gardener (or a tractor driver!).

Shown below are some of the areas that we are looking for help in – some much more specific than others. If you know anyone with any of those skills who might be interested in helping out, please pass on our details to them.

General volunteers

Over the next year the orchard will need lots of people to help with clearing, digging, sowing, fencing, preparing planting pits and much more

Farmers, tractor owners

Turning soil over, preparing boundary for hedge planting. Post hole machinery and operators more than welcome

We will need help with planting hedges and trees as well as preparing ground and planting seeds for plug plants

People with machinery

Ideally, we would like to find someone with a large mower that can collect clippings, but we are equally keen to hear from anyone with agricultural machinery who would be willing to help

DIY enthusiasts

Help needed for erection of fencing and gates, creation of pathways and areas and general furniture assembly
